Fluorescein Angiography

Fluorescein angiography is a test used to examine the blood circulation in the retina to monitor abnormalities.  This test can be repeated with no harm to the eye or body.

The fluorescein angiography test will be performed at your ophthalmologist’s office as an outpatient.  The test involves the injection of Fluorescein, a dye, into a vein in your arm.  The Fluorescein travels to the blood vessels in your retina.  Photos will be taken of your eye using a special camera with special filters.  Your ophthalmologist will analyze the photos, looking for retina damage.  The procedure, including time for your eye to dilate, will take approximately one hour.

It is possible that after the test, your skin and urine may appear discolored
until the dye is completely out of your system.
