Dr. Farrell Tyson, II, is the Medical Director of the Cape Coral Eye Center. Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Tyson is one of the leading innovators in the field. Introducing some of the latest advancements in the treatment of eye diseases, he has revolutionized eye care in Southwest Florida, providing specialized treatment methods for cataracts, glaucoma, refractive disorders and other diseases of the eye.
A renowned cataract surgeon, Dr. Tyson was the first to offer the "Cold Phaco" cataract removal system in Southwest Florida in 2002. A national instructor on the technique, he was the first surgeon in Southwest Florida to perform bimanual microincisional cataract surgery in 2004. Dr. Tyson was one of the first ophthalmologists to implant new multifocal lenses during cataract surgery; his results have been widely published in the field. He was also the first surgeon in Florida to use the Tecnis™ increased contrast intraocular lens (IOL) in a nonacademic setting. He is the inventor of the Tyson Bimanual Microphaco/ECP Diamond Knife, used worldwide in cataract surgery.

He made available to South Floridians Endoscopic CycloPhotocoagulation (ECP), an exciting development in the management of many types of glaucoma. The Cape Coral Eye Center is one of two "Eye Centers of Excellence" in the country where surgeons are trained on ECP.
He continues to advance ophthalmic treatment in the area of refractive surgery, performing custom wavefront LASIK, clear lens extraction, implantable contact lenses (ICL) and astigmatism reduction.
An internationally renowned speaker, Dr. Tyson has been a guest lecturer at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Turkish Glaucoma Congress in Izmir, Turkey, the Russian National Ophthalmology Congress in Moscow, and the Pan African American Congress of Ophthalmology in Dubai. He will lecture on ECP to his foreign colleagues this September at the European Society of Cataract and Refractic Surgery meeting in Berlin.
Dr. Tyson completed his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University in Biomedical Engineering while participating in extensive research at the Wilmer Eye Institute. His many published research projects were in the evaluation of the Excimer laser which is now used extensively in LASIK surgery. He received his Doctor of Medicine in 1997 from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He completed his surgical internship in 1998 at the Medical University of South Carolina, and his Ophthalmology residency at the University of South Carolina at Charleston. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Tyson has served on six medical missions providing ophthalmic aid to those in underprivileged communities in Mexico, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Kenya and Honduras.
Having completed two studies for the FDA, Dr. Tyson continues to be engaged in their research, and is currently involved in seven ongoing FDA studies. |
