Cape Coral, FL, January 10, 2008—The Cape Coral Eye Center is pleased to announce the inclusion of Benjamin G. Martin, M.D., Board Certified Ophthalmologist and Founder of the Cape Coral Eye Center, in “Guide to America’s Top Physicians” 2007 edition. The publication is produced by the Consumers Research Council of America and the selection process is based on a point value system that awards points for education, years in practice, and affiliations with professional organizations.
Dr. Martin is one of the most experienced eye surgeons in the area, and he has performed thousands of successful lens replacement surgeries during the twenty-seven years since he founded the Cape Coral Eye Center in February 1980. His area of concentration is now glaucoma. Because Dr. Martin has glaucoma himself, he developed a special interest in its study and has extensively researched its treatment. In addition, he is dedicated to educating the community about how early treatment and detection of glaucoma can prevent blindness. Since January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, Dr. Martin will be further spreading the word about the treatment of glaucoma through weekly educational newspaper articles. In 2004, he elected Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) for his own glaucoma treatment. The procedure was so effective in helping to control his glaucoma; he purchased the Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty laser needed to perform the treatment at the Cape Coral Eye Center. Often described by other physicians as a new procedure, the Cape Coral Eye Center has been performing Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty for the past three years with a great deal of success.
Dr. Martin’s education includes a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Engineering from the University of Louisville. He completed medical school at the University of Southern California, a Rotating Internship at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and an Ophthalmology Residency at the Wilford Hall Medical Center at San Antonio, where he served as Chief Resident. He has served as Chief of Ophthalmology & Surgical Services at MacDill Air Force Base and as Flight Surgeon at PhuCat Air Base in Vietnam. Dr. Martin retired from the Air Force with the rank of Colonel. When he was in Tampa, he was an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of South Florida, School of Medicine.
Dr. Martin’s professional affiliations include the following: Fellow, American College of Surgeons; Fellow, American Academy of Ophthalmology; American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery; American Society of Contemporary Ophthalmology; International Glaucoma Congress; American College of Eye Surgeons; Florida Society of Ophthalmology; American Medical Association; Florida Medical Association and Lee County Medical Society. |
